Character's Name: Matthew Huntington (or Matt)
Character's Race: Weredragon; distant relative/descendant of dragons
Gender: Male
Age: 224 (looks to be mid to late twenties; he's actually quite young for a weredragon: harsh experiences and torture have aged him)
Element: Storm
Height and Approximate Weight:
Height: 5' 10"
Weight: 130 lbs (like birds, he has hollow bones, allowing him to fly—and making him lighter in weight than he would otherwise be)
Wingspan: 20'
Description of Appearance:
Overall, Matt is lean and tough. He tends to move cautiously/warily, his gaze sharp and intense. As a human, he is attractive and has been known to flirt shamelessly with girls. However, in his true form he often appears alien and frightening to humans because he's a mix of dragon and human.
Weredragons come in a variety of forms. Some can appear human and then shift into a full dragon, but most are a combination of the two in one form. This combined shape is called their "true form." In his true form, Matt looks human, but with dragon-like scales and wings. His eyes are indigo-blue (except when he is a full dragon--then they turn silver-blue and strangely brilliant, so that they almost appear to glow). His eyes do glow silver-blue when he works magic. His hair is a plain brown and worn loose and short. Matt has medium, tanned skin with silver and brilliant blue scales. He also has, as mentioned, massive bat-like wings in a deep blue shot through with silver; the sun shines through them when they are extended. His wings spread out from his shoulder blades, the skin pulling from his shoulders and parallel to his spine to about the base of his scapula. He has a long whip-like scaled tail. Scales fill in between his wings and down his spine to his tail, which has ridged spikes at the end. He has tough, claw-like nails on both hands and feet that he keeps trimmed short (otherwise they would form blue-black claws). Matt has scaling on his forearms, as well as the area around his collarbone and the top of his chest. The top of his cheeks are also silvered with scales (though the tiny scales on his cheeks aren’t too obvious—they look mostly like a bluish sheen). Matt also has a number of tattoos, particularly running down his upper arms; though some cover his back and chest (none are on the scaled part of his body). They are in dark blue-black or golden ink. Most of his tattoos are ancient runes or symbols of the dragons. He also has a number of ridged scars across his back that run down to his thighs and across his chest. Most are scarred over whip-marks.
History:
Matt first went into hiding when his parents were killed by the Other (he has no other name for the creature). Many of the dragons and weredragons were being killed, and his parents, who had escaped up to that point, were some of the last. (Since weredragons age much slower than humans, in conjunction with their long lives, he was still a child in appearance/development, but already several decades old.) He worked odd jobs, while traveling south into the humans' land. He joined the army and learned to fight, but eventually left and returned to the Northern Wastes. There, he lived for a time in Karis where he met and fell in love with Seraphia, another weredragon. Unfortunately, Karis was raided and many were killed. He and Seraphia escaped, but not far before being captured. She was burned alive as a "twisted deviation." Matt was brought to the Other, where he stayed for many years as a slave before escaping. He lives in hiding again, now amongst the humans, who don't know or recognize him.
Education: Weapons, fighting, street warfare, intelligence gathering (spying), assassination, and hostage rescue. Of course, he also has the classic “reading, writing, and arithmetic” education—though it took him a while to complete it. He could be considered college level in his skills, though he never graduated from any school. Matt is also skilled in interrogation, being able to “catch thoughts.”
Occupation: Doesn't currently have much of one, except wandering about Rhyallia. He hires himself out ocassionally as a mercenary, but has no interest in being tied to someone/some place. He finds the current government cheap and rather foolish at its ignorance about the stone that it holds. He does still hold to some form of what the weredragons originally were: guardians; and thus makes an effort to stop injustice when he sees it.
Status in Community: In normal circumstances, the weredragons are called Dragon Lords, and guard sections of land. So Matt is lord of an estate near Karnaim Lake, making him Lord Huntington, or more accurately, Lord of the Hunt. Unfortunately, returning to his family home would likely result in his death, so he currently lives as a wanderer with no status.
Current Home: Wandering Rhyallia in disguise
Personality:
Weredragons have (normally) high moral standards and Matt is no exception. Matt’s trouble is his lack of training—he often wants to do the right thing in a situation, but doesn’t know what it is. He’s tried learning by going Between, but has found little help from his ancestors. Matt is very intelligent and outwardly appears relaxed, curious, and almost friendly. He likes to meet new people and can be quite charming if he wants to. However, he's also aloof, cool, disinterested, blood thirsty, dark and threatening, dangerous, wary, cautious, controlling, angry, hateful, and vengeful. (Did I get enough descriptive words in there? ) Matt finds himself constantly frustrated by his inability to defeat the Other and by death, destruction, and injustice—and the fact that he can’t stop it. He is still at heart a guardian, though he's been driven off of his home and lives in hiding.
Matt's general view on life is, "It sucks, more often than not, but it’s the only one I have and I hardly know what’s waiting after, so I hang on." Life has been hard on him, leaving Matt with many internal struggles. In a way, he blames himself for Seraphia’s death, though he’s long since set it aside. He desires revenge on the Other, and yet feels that this is wrong. He longs for the time when dragons and weredragons roamed and guarded earth, and yet feels glad that he’s the last one left. The feeling leaves him confused. Somewhat tied to that, he secretly wishes to be someone that acts with honor and restores the dragon-human ties. He wants to be someone great, yet knows that he doesn’t have it in him and that he can’t do anything to stop the Other.
Matt is able to piece together a situation quickly; able to think quickly and act decisively. He misses nothing and is catlike, graceful, and silent. Deadly with any type of weapon, he usually carries a number of hidden weapons on his person, almost always including a sword and a number of knives. Funny, with a good sense of humor, he can also be deadly, serious, and withdrawn as the mood takes him. Generally light-hearted around others, he carries heavy burdens on the inside. Gets along well with most people.
Magical Skills:
Matt has several unique skills: skills that are unique to weredragons, that is. They are: Thought Catching, Restoration, Shadowing, and Fire Calling. Of course, he can also fly and is stronger than the average human. He also has amazing night vision and hearing: all of his senses are considerably stronger than the average human’s. He can also go Between or, after death, keep himself in Between before completely leaving life (a sort of undead half-life).
Thought Catching: This might be called mind-reading, but it isn’t, actually. It’s literally more like “catching” thoughts. The more talented can have silent conversations where they do something like “cast” their thoughts at one another. Matt has found that some humans, with training, can exhibit this skill, but it’s rare. Weredragons can also block others from reading their thoughts by building an internal “wall.” Or, they can use this skill along with paying attention to the expressions and body language of others to pick up on some their thoughts. This requires a great deal of concentration and focus, and takes practice. The thoughts that are heard are the ones clearly thought by the other person and thus mentally “cast” out—though humans don’t usually realize that they are doing this. Thus, Matt can’t read all—or often, even very many—thoughts, but he can catch the clearer, more direct ones. Thoughts also aren’t always conveyed with words, but may be sounds, feelings, or sensations.
Restoration: This is the ability to heal any and all types of wounds—even fatal ones. Unfortunately for Matt, at least, this skill is also tempered by the fact that it is extremely painful for him to heal others. It would be painful for him to heal himself, as well, except that being as he’s already in pain, he doesn’t usually notice. Since this skill takes effort and thought, he can’t do it spontaneously or continuously—though he has been known to self-heal in the midst of a battle. Actually, wounds that would be fatal for others don’t usually kill Matt instantly, giving him the chance to self-heal before dying. This is what allows dragons and weredragons to live for thousands of years.
Shadowing: This is the name the weredragons have for the ability to “disappear.” This ability takes many forms. One is their talent for changing from their true form into a human. They can take the form of any human, but usually settle on one “shape” and stick with it. They also have the ability to become invisible. No weredragon literally becomes invisible; rather, they “shadow” themselves from the eyes of others, making it appear that they’ve simply disappeared into thin air. Though a weredragon can “shadow” for nearly unlimited periods of time, they usually use their invisibility to escape a situation, since they are still physically present and thus still easily found and/or harmed. It can also be used to disappear from in front of a person and then reappear behind them, giving the weredragon the chance to slip into a better position—either throwing the other off-balance, or allowing a killing blow.
Fire Calling: All dragons can use fire in many forms, and weredragons are no different. Like dragons, weredragons can cast fire from both their mouths and their hands. This isn’t usually used by weredragons to kill, though, as blowing fire (or even throwing it), doesn’t necessarily travel very far. It’s usually used in conjunction with other weapons. Matt can also raise a wall of fire and has a specially designed knife that can “hold” magic fire and thus burn as well as pierce. Dragons, of course, can cast fire much farther and often times call lightening, as well.
Between: Is a unique state that is sort of between the worlds and life and death that weredragons can enter for unlimited periods of time. Some choose to stay in Between after death in the world for a time before leaving for the Afterlife altogether. This is especially true after the destruction of the weredragons (and many of the dragons). Many have chosen to stay in Between out of rage at what was done to them: though they can have no direct effect on those alive from Between. Some have formed a council of sorts that would place demands on Matt if they could: except that he rarely visits them. Sometimes the more powerful among them can return briefly to life as a sort of ghostlike creature and give warnings, but they only chose to do this for other weredragons.
Personal Premise/Ambition/Motto: One life can turn the world…But it probably won’t be mine.
Matt is a character that's been around for a while...You'll notice that he's more of an urban fantasy character (that is, he usually uses guns, not swords), so I adjusted him slightly, to fit on here. I think some of the wording is still modern, though...Oh, well. Anyway, I have multiple pages on my computer about his character, so this is almost a shortened version... Hope the history makes sense, since I had to adjust it considerably to fit.
